Faith Isn’t a Spare Tire

I don’t know where you are in life right now, but I do know this: a lot of people treat religion like a gym membership in February — interesting in theory, rarely used, and easy to ignore when life feels comfortable.

faith

There are probably some understandable reasons for that. Let’s look at a few of the most common ones.

I Don’t Need Religion

Some people feel they simply don’t need faith. Usually, these are capable, hardworking, disciplined people. They’ve built a good life through determination, wise choices, strong character, and maybe a little favor from above — whether they admit it or not.

They know how to focus, how to finish what they start, and how to keep going when others quit. Maybe you know someone like that. Maybe you are someone like that. If so, well done. Seriously.

But here’s the trouble: sooner or later, life hits everyone with something bigger than a strong work ethic. Illness. Loss. Betrayal. Fear. Grief. A crisis has a way of exposing the limits of self-reliance.

faith 2

It’s easy to feel independent when the sky is blue and the pantry is full. It’s another story when the storm rolls in and the lights go out. Suddenly, people who never thought they needed God begin looking upward. Funny how that works.

As the old saying goes, there are no atheists in foxholes. And when the floodwaters rose in Noah’s day, I imagine nobody was standing around saying, “You know, maybe the old man had a point.”

Hypocrites

Then there’s another reason people reject Christianity: hypocrites.

faith 3

And let’s be honest — this one stings because it’s real. Some people act holy on Sunday and then live like the devil’s intern the rest of the week. They may use church for status, influence, business contacts, or appearances. They know how to say the right words, shake the right hands, and wear the right smile.

Sadly, nothing turns people away faster than someone who talks about Jesus but looks nothing like Him.

But here’s an important truth: counterfeit money only exists because there’s something real worth imitating. Fake Christians do not disprove Christ. They only prove that people are very good at pretending.

Rejecting Jesus because of hypocrites makes about as much sense as refusing to go to the doctor because some people fake being healthy. It’s understandable, but it’s not wise.

faith 4

Yes, hypocrisy does damage. A great deal of it. But Christ is still true even when His followers fail to be.

Faith on a Convenience Plan

Then there are those who want religion now and then — just enough to feel spiritual, but not enough to be changed.

They treat faith like a buffet. “I’ll take a little comfort, a little inspiration, a few answered prayers, and maybe some heaven later. Conviction? Sacrifice? Surrender? No thanks, I’m watching my intake.”

This kind of casual faith is popular because it asks very little. It fits neatly into a busy life. It doesn’t interfere too much. It lets a person feel religious without becoming devoted.

But following Jesus was never meant to be a part-time hobby or a backup plan for emergencies. He didn’t call people to admire Him from a safe distance. He called them to follow Him fully.

True Seekers

Then there are the true seekers.

These are the people who genuinely want God, not just His blessings. They are not looking for a convenient faith, but a true one. They understand that following Christ comes with a cost, but they believe He is worth it.

faith 5

Jesus’ disciples were like that. They were not perfect — far from it. They doubted, stumbled, misunderstood, and occasionally said things that probably made the angels put their heads in their hands. But they were committed. In the end, they gave their lives for the One who gave His life for them.

That kind of faith changes people. And changed people can change the world.

A Personal Question

If I’m honest, the group I want to belong to is the true seekers.

Not the self-sufficient.
Not the hypocrites.
Not the convenience shoppers pushing a spiritual cart down aisle five.

I want to be someone who truly follows Jesus — wholeheartedly, humbly, and faithfully.
