Healthy Food - You're Gonna Eat This Up!

Healthy Food is my attempt to offer helpful hints to optimize your eating habits.  Yes, mine too!

Part of our habits of eating depend on our environment – where we live, our society, our family of origin, and other factors.

Some people’s diet depends heavily on meat or fish while in other parts of the world offer more choices from plant-based foods.  Each option has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages.

As a layman, I will suggest healthy food principles that someone might find beneficial to their own circumstance.  As with any plan, the best counsel I can offer is to check with your own health care professional before making any significant changes in your own diet.

While I rarely eat meat or fish, I do consider myself to be a vegetarian, though not a vegan because I do eat an occasional egg or cottage cheese.

Healthy Food, Old-School Thinking

In past years it was thought that a vegetarian diet was not enough to sustain health because of a lack of protein.  I have not found that to be the case and I believe that position has proven to be unsustainable.

My constant battle with weight suggests to me that vegetarians get plenty of protein!

My mother-in-law has been a vegetarian all of her life and is well into her 90’s!

 The Original Healthy Food

The original diet given by God in the Garden of Eden was certainly vegetarian - and certainly followed all we know about healthy food!  And then some!   The Bible records no animal ever being killed to feed Adam and Eve while they were living in the garden.  In fact, no animal ever died until after they sinned and God killed an animal to provide clothing for them to survive after leaving the Garden.

Some of the most common and deadly diseases are now called “Western” diseases because they were common in the West and, at one time, rarely seen in developing countries.  These diseases are: heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

Interestingly enough, as developing countries are influenced by the diets of Western culture, they too are seeing significant increases in these same deadly diseases.

A growing concern in Western cultures is a health condition called celiac disease.  If you would like to learn more about it, click here.

A healthy food diet will contain an adequate amount of antioxidants. Antioxidants are necessary to protect your health from free radicals.  Free radicals are constantly being created by environmental factors as well as normal body functions.  To maintain balance in your body, antioxidants are also necessary to stay healthy.

It is very difficult, it not impossible, to overstate the importance of diet to your state of health and well being.  To learn more, check out the anitaging diet.

What about this "Healthy Food" thing?  Is it reasonable?  Is it worth it?  Are you already doing it?  Do you feel you just must have your "meat and potatoes"?
